A man from Yorkshire. Note that the -man ending really does mean a man here — for a woman, people say Yorkshirewoman, and increasingly they just say "someone from Yorkshire" to avoid choosing. (Some dictionaries define it loosely as "a person from Yorkshire", but in real speech you would not call a woman a Yorkshireman.) The word carries more than geography. When someone says "He's a Yorkshireman" with a certain tone, they are pointing at a character type: plain-speaking to the point of rudeness, careful with money, stubborn, suspicious of showing off, and quietly certain that Yorkshire is the best place on earth. Yorkshire people use it about themselves with pride; others sometimes use it teasingly. It is a stereotype, so it is not true of everyone, but you will meet it constantly in British books, comedy and sport. The same pattern makes Irishman, Frenchman, Welshman, Scotsman.
