A Frenchman is a man from France. People also use it for a man whose family is French. You still hear it in news, sport, and everyday talk, but in careful writing many people now say a French man, or a man from France, because Frenchman can sound a little old. It is only for a man, and only for France. A man from Belgium, Switzerland, or West Africa who speaks French is not a Frenchman — he is not from France.
