A yngling is a small sailing boat, about 6 metres long, built for racing. Three people sail it together. It has a keel — a heavy fin under the boat — so it does not tip over easily, which is different from the small light boats that beginners often learn in. It was designed in Norway in the 1960s, and for a while it was an Olympic class: women raced ynglings at the Olympic Games from 2004 to 2008. Outside sailing clubs and sailing news, almost nobody uses this word. It is a class name, like a model of car, so you say "a Yngling" or "an Yngling" for one boat, and people often write it with a capital Y. If you meet this word, it is nearly always in a sentence about a race.

組成From Norwegian, Danish and Swedish yngling, meaning "a young man, a youngster". It goes back to Old Norse ungr ("young") plus the ending -lingr, which makes a word mean a small or young one. So the name of the boat really means "the young one" — a fitting name for a small boat. It is the same word, by a different road, as the old English word youngling.
