A duckling is a young duck, still small — in the picture most people have, still yellow and fluffy. That is the home meaning. Children know it from the story The Ugly Duckling, where the “duckling” is not a duck at all; though actually that is the joke of the tale. On a menu, duckling can mean the meat of a young duck. The word is gentle and everyday; nobody uses it as a hard technical term.
