A man who sails a yacht — a boat used for pleasure or for racing, not for work and not for carrying goods. The word points at the person, and usually at someone who does this often enough that it is part of who he is: he owns a yacht, or races them, or has sailed across an ocean. You would call a man a yachtsman in a newspaper story, in a report about a race, or on the page of a club — it is a slightly formal, slightly old-fashioned, respectful word. You would not normally use it about a man who went out on a friend's boat once last summer; for that you just say "he went sailing". Note also that a "yacht" can be two rather different things. It can be a sailing boat that one person or a small crew handles, and it can be a huge expensive motor boat with a paid crew and a swimming pool. "Yachtsman" leans strongly toward the first: it suggests a person who actually sails, who knows the ropes and the weather. A rich man who owns a big motor yacht and never touches the wheel is an owner, and people would more likely say "he owns a yacht" than call him a yachtsman. The word is also fading a little. Because it names a man, and because sailing today is done by everybody, many races, clubs and reporters now say "sailor" for anyone, which avoids the problem of choosing between yachtsman and yachtswoman. Older writing and the names of old clubs still use it everywhere, so you will meet it in reading more often than you will need to say it.
