The adverb of 'wry'. It tells you how someone did something — with that half-smiling, self-mocking manner of a person who knows the situation is bad but has decided to see the funny side of it. It goes with verbs of face and voice above all: smile wryly, grin wryly, laugh wryly, say something wryly, observe wryly, note wryly, add wryly. In novels and news writing it is a favourite tag after a quoted line — 'At least the rain is free,' he said wryly — and it is doing real work there, because it tells the reader not to take the line as a straight complaint. The tone underneath is dry and quiet, never a big laugh, and often the speaker is laughing at themselves. Position: usually right after the verb, or at the end of the clause.
組成wry + -ly. The '-ly' is the ordinary English ending that turns an adjective into an adverb (slow → slowly); it goes back through Middle English '-ly' and Old English '-līċe' to a Germanic word meaning 'body, form' — so originally 'in the form of'. 'wry' itself means twisted, from Old English 'wrīġian' (to turn, to twist).
