One way to hold this word: a worm eating straight through a block of wood. It does not crawl around the outside, where the journey would be long. It goes through the middle, and the two far corners of the block are suddenly joined by one narrow tunnel. Every use of wormhole can be seen as some version of that tunnel through the solid thing.

The word is worm plus hole, and it appears from about 1594 meaning the hole a worm leaves. The physics use is a borrowing of that same picture: John Archibald Wheeler introduced it in the scientific sense in 1957.
