A workbench is a heavy, solid table you work at with your hands and tools — in a garage, a workshop, a factory, a school woodwork room. Strength is the point: it has to take , sawing, and clamping without moving, so it is usually thick wood or metal, often with a vice fixed to one edge, and sometimes drawers or a rack for tools underneath. That is what separates it from an ordinary desk or table. You work at a workbench, and you can be over the workbench, bent over your job. The word is completely ordinary and everyday among people who make or repair things. It also has a second life in computing, where a piece of software that gathers several tools in one place is often named a workbench — a data workbench, a language workbench. That use is borrowed straight from the physical one: one surface where all your tools are laid out ready.
組成work + bench. Bench here is the older sense of a long, solid seat or slab — a flat surface strong enough to sit or work on — not a park seat.
