A city in the west of England, close to Wales, sitting on the River . It is known for two things: its great cathedral, and its fine china — the cups and plates made from baked white clay, sold as Royal Worcester. The city gives its name to sauce, the thin dark brown sauce, and it is also the name of a place in the American state of Massachusetts, where the local people say it their own way. The thing every needs from this word is the sound. Worcester is said "WUSS-ter" — two beats, not three. The middle -ce- is completely silent, and the -or- at the front is said like the "u" in "put", not like "war". This is not a strange exception; a whole family of old English town names does it, all of them ending in the same worn-down -cester. Say the letters as they are written and English people will simply not know which city you mean, so it is worth the sound and forgetting the spelling.
組成From Old English Weogornaceaster: the Weogoran, a tribe living by the river, plus ceaster, the old English word for a walled Roman town, taken from Latin castrum ("fort"). So the whole name means "the Roman fort of the Weogoran people". That ceaster has worn down over the centuries to the -cester we now say as -ster.
