    Manchester is a large city in the northwest of England. It was once famous for wool and cotton mills; the factories made the city’s money, and “Cottonopolis” was an old nickname. Today it is the financial and business centre for that part of England. It is also famous for music — many pop and rock bands come from Manchester, and the city has a long nightclub story — and for two football clubs, Manchester United and Manchester City, whose rivalry is part of daily talk. The city centre still shows Victorian brick and warehouses beside newer glass. The name comes from Old English Mameceaster: an old local name, written in Latin as Mamucium (perhaps a breast-shaped hill), plus Old English ceaster, “Roman fort,” from Latin castra, “camp.” Though actually, in Australian and New Zealand shops, manchester with a small m can also mean household cloth — sheets, towels, table linen — because the city once made so much cotton. That sense is rare in American English and not the usual one in Britain either.
