1. 1

Chester is a town in , in northwest England. It is where the local government for that county is based — the county town. The old part still has a wall around it, and many old buildings, because the Romans once had a camp there. People walk the walls; visitors come for the history as much as for the shops. The name itself is that old word for a Roman town or camp. That is why so many English places end in -chester, -, or -cester: Manchester, Lancaster, Winchester. They are not named after this Chester; they share the same old piece. , the county, is “Chester’s shire.”
