Knowing how to look after yourself in a forest — reading animal tracks, finding your way without a map, choosing a campsite, making a fire, knowing which plants are safe. It's practical knowledge that comes from being in the woods, not from a book. Hunters, guides, scouts and campers are the people this word is used about, and it has a slightly old-fashioned, adventurous feeling — you meet it in books about wilderness and camping more often than in daily talk. Uncountable: 'good woodcraft', never 'a woodcraft'. A second, much less common meaning is skill at making things from wood, but for that most people just say woodworking or woodcarving.
