Witchcraft is the use of magic powers — the kind you get by learning spells and charms, not the kind you are simply born with. In most stories the powers are evil, or at least dangerous: cursing a neighbour, making crops die, making someone fall in love against their will. That is the main sense, and the one you meet in history and in fairy tales: 'She was accused of witchcraft and put on trial.' But you should know that some people today practise witchcraft themselves and mean nothing evil by it — a modern religion with herbs, seasons, and small rituals. So the word has two temperatures depending on who is speaking: frightening in an old trial record, ordinary and even warm in a modern person's description of their own beliefs. There is a third, light use that is very common and easy to miss. English speakers say 'witchcraft' about anything that works so well it seems impossible. 'How did you fix it in five minutes? That's witchcraft.' Nobody means real magic here; it is a compliment, half joking. Grammar: it is uncountable. You practise witchcraft, you accuse someone of witchcraft, you never say 'a witchcraft' or 'witchcrafts'.
