Picture someone who has been through a lot and, faced with a hard choice, sees which way is actually right — not because they are clever, but because life has taught them. That judgement is wisdom. The word then splits: it can name the store of good sense a whole people has built up, or it can be pinned onto a belief that is only assumed to be wise.
