Orthodoxy is an idea, or a whole set of ideas, that a group treats as the correct and proper one. It can be about religion: the “right” belief, as that group sees it. It can also be about anything people argue over — money, teaching, science — when one view has become the usual, accepted line. The word is a little formal. Used kindly, it just means the standard view. Used with a raised , it can suggest the accepted view has grown stiff, and someone wants to question it. Though actually, there is also a capital-O use: Orthodox churches (often called Eastern Orthodox) are a large Christian family; that is a proper name, not just “usual opinion.” The small-o word is the general one this entry is for. The adjective is orthodox; this noun with -y is the belief or the package of accepted ideas.
