Noun. A large flat board with a smooth, shiny white surface that you write on with special markers, and wipe clean with a cloth or an . It replaced the (also called a ) in most schools and offices because there is no chalk dust. In classrooms in Taiwan and almost everywhere else, this is now the normal board at the front of the room.
An interactive whiteboard (or smartboard) is the electronic kind — really a giant touch screen connected to a computer — and it is worth knowing that phrase, because schools use it a lot.
The word has also grown a life outside the classroom. In offices and tech companies, 'the whiteboard' is where thinking happens in front of other people: you draw your idea while everyone watches. From that came a verb — to whiteboard something means to work an idea out on a board with a group ("let's whiteboard this on Monday"). This is business and tech language, quite informal, and getting more common. In job interviews at software companies, 'a whiteboard interview' means one where you must solve a problem by writing code on a board with no computer.
