A surfboard is the long, flat board a person stands on to ride ocean waves. Most are made of foam covered in hard resin, light enough to carry under one arm, with one to three small fins underneath at the back to help the rider steer. Boards come in different shapes and each shape has its own name — a longboard is long and gentle and good for beginners, a shortboard is small and quick and turns sharply.

The word is an ordinary everyday noun with no special feeling to it. Taiwan has real surfing beaches, so a student here may well have seen one at Jinshan or Yilan or Kenting.

One thing worth separating: a surfboard is for standing up on, and it is not the same as a bodyboard or boogie board, which is short and soft and which you lie down on. Nor is it a paddleboard, which you stand on but move with a long paddle in flat water. English keeps these as three different words, and shop staff and surfers will hear the difference immediately.

There is also a rarer verb, to surfboard, meaning to ride on one, but almost nobody uses it — people just say "to surf."
