1. 1

Whimsically is the adverb of whimsical: it tells you *how* something is done or made, and it means 'in an odd, playful, charming way'. 'The rooms are whimsically ' — in that light, fanciful style. 'She whimsically named her car Robert' — she gave it that name for fun, with no serious reason. There are really two things it can do. First, it can describe a *style*: whimsically drawn, whimsically named, whimsically designed — done in a way that is playful and a bit strange, and pleasant because of it. Second, it can describe a *manner of speaking or smiling*: 'He smiled whimsically', meaning his smile was odd and , as though he found something quietly funny that he was not going to explain. Like the adjective, it has the other, cooler use too: doing something whimsically can mean doing it on a , with no good reason. 'Funding is handed out whimsically' means it depends on somebody's mood, not on rules — a complaint. Honestly, this is a word you will read far more than you will say. It is a bit long, and in everyday speech people are more likely to say 'in a playful way' or just use the adjective. But you should recognise it instantly in book reviews, travel writing, and descriptions of design, where it appears often.

    以異想天開的方式;帶著童趣地、隨興地。修飾動作或風格,如 whimsically decorated(佈置得充滿奇趣)、smiled whimsically(似笑非笑、若有所思地笑)。同樣有「憑一時興起、毫無章法地」的貶義用法。

組成whimsical plus -ly. The ending -ly is the everyday English way of turning an adjective into an adverb (quick → quickly, sad → sadly). Note the spelling: whimsical already ends in -al, so you simply add -ly and get double l in the middle — whimsic-al-ly.
