The wheelbase of a car, bus, truck, motorcycle or bicycle is the distance from the centre of the front wheel to the centre of the back wheel — more exactly, from the front to the back . It is a measurement, so it is always a number: "a wheelbase of 2.7 metres", "a 106-inch wheelbase". This is a technical word from cars and engineering, not everyday talk. You will meet it in car reviews, sales , and specification tables, next to length, width and height. People who love cars use it a lot, because wheelbase changes how a car feels: a long wheelbase gives more room inside for the back seats and a smoother, calmer ride, while a short wheelbase makes a car easier to turn in small spaces and, some drivers say, more fun. Car companies often sell a "long-wheelbase" version of a model — the same car, stretched, with extra leg room in the back; in that use the word comes before the noun with , and is often to LWB (and SWB for short-wheelbase). Note that wheelbase is not the same as the length of the car: a car has some body sticking out in front of the front wheels and behind the back wheels, so the car is always longer than its wheelbase. The word for the distance between the LEFT and RIGHT wheels is different — that is the track (or tread). Almost always a countable noun; nobody uses it as a verb.
組成wheel（輪子）+ base（基座、底座、基準）。The wheel part is the ordinary English wheel, and base came into English from Old French base, from Latin basis, itself borrowed from Ancient Greek βάσις (basis), a "step, foundation, something you stand on".
