west; the one that is more to the west than any other in the group. "The westernmost island of Japan" is the island of Japan that lies west; "the westernmost point of Europe" is the piece of Europe you cannot go west of without leaving it. It is a superlative — it already means "the most west", so it names one thing (or one group of things) and normally takes *the*. Where do you meet it? Geography books, travel writing, news, and museum signs. It is precise, slightly formal, and not something you would say while giving a friend directions; there you would just say "the one on the far west" or "the last one on the left".
