Having had a lot of schooling, and knowing a lot about many different things because of it. Two ideas sit inside the word and they don't always travel together. One is the paper: years of school, a university degree, maybe more. The other is what is in the head: wide reading, broad knowledge, being able to talk about history and science and books, not just one subject. When English speakers say someone is well-educated, they usually mean both, and they usually mean the broad kind of knowing — a person who studied one narrow thing very deeply is more likely to be called an expert or highly qualified than well-educated. This matters in Taiwan, where the natural translation makes people think first of 學歷. Note also that it is not the same as clever. Someone can be very smart with little schooling, and someone can hold a degree and still be foolish — English speakers are quite aware of that gap and sometimes say 'well-educated' with a slight edge, meaning 'had every advantage'. The word is fairly formal and appears often in writing about people's backgrounds.

這個字的重點在台灣常常會想到學歷，但它和 clever 不一樣。有人很聰明但讀書不多，有人有學位卻不見得有見識。英語使用者很清楚這個差別，有時候說 well-educated 會帶著一點諷刺，意思是「他的條件已經很好了」。這個字偏正式，常出現在談論人的背景的文章裡。
