A chemical you spray or pour on ground to kill unwanted plants. Farmers use it on fields, councils use it on pavements and , and ordinary people buy a bottle for the cracks in the driveway. It is a countable-ish everyday word — "a weedkiller" for a particular product, "weedkiller" uncountable for the stuff in general. Written as one word in British English, though you will also see "weed killer" as two, and both are read the same. The technical word, the one on the label and in news reports, is herbicide. Some weedkillers kill everything they touch; others are made to kill broad-leaved weeds and leave grass alive. The word often shows up in worried contexts — safety, run-off into water, whether a particular brand causes cancer — because it is, , poison, and people who use it are supposed to wear gloves.
