Draw a wave crossing a page, up and down and up again. The gap from one peak to the next is the whole word: wave plus length. Everything else is that measurement put to work. Give each radio station its own stretch of wave, and turning the dial becomes hunting for a wavelength. Then treat two people as two radios, and being on the same wavelength is what happens when both are set to the same place and every signal comes through clean.

From the word’s history

Wavelength is simply wave plus length: the length of one wave. The compound still says its own definition out loud.

wavelength 就是 wave 加 length:一個波的長度。這個複合字到今天還把自己的定義寫在臉上,所以最物理的那個意思一直是它的中心。

Two branches

一個波有多長

這一家就是字面本身:量出一個波的長度,再把這個量法用到無線電上。

noun · B2

The distance between one high point of a wave and the next high point, used for sound, light, radio and other kinds of energy that travel as waves.

兩個人對到同一個頻率

把收音機的畫面搬到人身上。這是理解上的比喻,不是歷史上的演變。

noun · B2

If two people are on the same wavelength, they think and feel in such similar ways that they understand each other easily; if they are on a different wavelength, they keep missing what the other one means.
