Vituperation is bitter, abusive scolding — a stream of angry blame aimed at someone, usually out loud and usually at length. It is an uncountable noun: 'a torrent of vituperation', 'much vituperation', never 'a vituperation'. What separates it from plain 'criticism' is that criticism can be fair and quiet, while vituperation is loud, personal, and meant to wound. What separates it from 'insults' is scale and shape: insults are single hits, vituperation is a flood pouring out over minutes or over a whole campaign. You will often see it with words that suggest liquid or volume — a stream, a torrent, a flood of vituperation — and in the phrase 'heap vituperation on someone'. This is a formal, literary word, and it now sounds slightly old-fashioned; it belongs to serious writing about politics, feuds, and history rather than to speech. If a student used it about their coworker complaining, it would sound comically grand. In ordinary English you would say 'abuse' or 'a rant'.
