Virtuosity is very high technical skill in performing — the kind that makes an audience sit forward because what they are watching looks impossible. It belongs first to music: a pianist who plays passages nobody else can play at that speed and still make beautiful has virtuosity. From there it spreads easily to dance, sport, painting, cooking, and even to writing and speaking — anywhere a person's control of the craft itself becomes part of the show. The word carries a specific flavour, and you should hear it. Virtuosity is about *technique on display*. It says: look what this person's hands can do. That is why it often appears with a small reservation attached — "all virtuosity and no feeling," "empty virtuosity." Critics use it that way constantly. So virtuosity is genuine praise, but it praises one dimension only, and a writer who wants to say an artist is *moving* will reach for a different word. It is an uncountable noun, and it is formal — a review word, an essay word. In conversation people say "she's incredibly skilful" or "his technique is amazing." The related person-word is virtuoso: a virtuoso is someone who has virtuosity, and it can also work as an adjective, as in "a virtuoso performance."
