Someone whose business is wine. In its older and stricter sense a vintner buys and sells wine — a wine merchant, a wine dealer. That is the meaning the dictionaries lead with, and it is what the word meant for centuries in Britain, where the Vintners were one of the old London trade companies. In modern use, especially American use, the word has drifted. Many people now say vintner for the person who makes the wine — the owner of the winery, the one who grows the grapes and presses them. Careful writers still separate the two: a winemaker makes it, a vintner sells it. Most readers no longer feel the difference, so if you need to be exact, use the plain word (wine merchant, winemaker) and avoid the argument. Either way it is a formal, slightly old-fashioned word. In ordinary conversation people say wine shop, wine seller, or the name of the winery. Vintner belongs to wine writing, labels, and articles about the trade.
