Vintage first meant the year a wine was made, and how good that year's wine turned out — 'a 1990 vintage' is wine made in 1990. From there it grew into a bigger idea: something old, from the past, but valued for its quality or style, not just because it's old. 'Vintage clothes' or 'a vintage car' are old in a good way, worth collecting or — unlike an item that's simply old and worn out.
