Vigilant describes a person (or a group, or a country) who is watching carefully all the time, so that if something dangerous or wrong starts to happen, they will notice it. It is the adjective that goes with . It carries the idea of alertness held over time, not just a single moment of noticing, and it almost always looks toward trouble — you are vigilant against danger, crime, cheating, illness, mistakes. You would not say someone is vigilant about the beautiful view. The word is formal-ish; in ordinary conversation people say 'keep an eye on', 'watch out', 'stay alert'. But 'stay vigilant' and 'remain vigilant' turn up constantly in official warnings, so most meet it there first. Grammar: it is used before a noun ('a vigilant guard') or after be/stay/remain ('we must remain vigilant'). What you are watching for takes 'against' or 'for': 'vigilant against fraud', 'vigilant for signs of infection'. The adverb is vigilantly, the noun .

From French vigilant or Latin vigilans, present participle of vigilare 'to stay awake', from vigil 'awake'.
