    To invigilate is to watch people who are sitting an examination and make sure they do not cheat — no notes, no phones, no talking, papers collected on time. The teacher invigilates; the students take the paper. This is ordinary exam English in Britain and in many halls that follow British exam style. In American English the same job is almost always to proctor. If you only hear US television, you may never meet invigilate; that does not make it rare in , Cambridge, and a lot of university exam talk. You invigilate an exam, not a football match. The Latin idea is staying awake to keep watch over someone.
