Glasses whose lenses change strength gradually from top to bottom, so one pair works for far away, middle distance, and reading. You look through the top part to see the road, the middle part to see a computer screen, and the bottom part to read a book. The word is almost always plural — 'varifocals', like 'glasses' and 'trousers' — because one pair has two lenses. You can also say 'varifocal lenses' or 'varifocal glasses', where 'varifocal' works as an adjective. This is the normal British word; Americans usually say 'progressive lenses' or 'progressives', and eye shops in many places use that name too. Older glasses of a similar idea are 'bifocals', which have just two areas with a visible line between them; varifocals have no line, so nobody can tell from outside that you are wearing them. That is a big part of why people buy them. In real life people mostly talk about them in one of two ways: as a sign of getting older ('I've had to get varifocals'), or as something you must get used to — many new wearers feel dizzy on stairs for the first week or two, because the bottom of the lens is not made for looking down at your feet.
