組成The name comes from the Uruguay River, from Guaraní — an indigenous language of the region. It joins uruguâ, a kind of river snail or shellfish, with ĭ, meaning water: so roughly "river of the snails". Spanish took it as Uruguay, and English took it from Spanish.
