Uruguay is a small country in South America, sitting between Argentina and Brazil with the Atlantic on one side. Its capital is , and only about three and a half million people live there — roughly a seventh of Taiwan, in a land about four times bigger. It is a proper noun, so it always takes a capital U and normally no "the". Outside geography class, most people meet the name through football: Uruguay won the very first World Cup in 1930 and has been beating far bigger countries ever since. It is also known for beef, for being one of the most stable and least religious countries in the region, and for some things earlier than its neighbours. Say it roughly "YOOR-uh-gway" in British English, "YOOR-uh-gwye" in American — both are used, and neither will confuse anyone.
組成The name comes from the Uruguay River, from Guaraní — an indigenous language of the region. It joins uruguâ, a kind of river snail or shellfish, with ĭ, meaning water: so roughly "river of the snails". Spanish took it as Uruguay, and English took it from Spanish.
