If something is unwarranted, there was no good reason for it — and the speaker is not happy about it. It is used for actions, reactions and comments that go beyond what the situation deserved: unwarranted criticism, an unwarranted delay, unwarranted interference, unwarranted attention.
The key idea is proportion. Nobody says an unwarranted thing didn't happen; they say it wasn't earned. If a customer shouts for ten minutes because his coffee arrived a little late, the anger is unwarranted — real anger, but far bigger than the cause. So the word carries a quiet judgement: you did not have the right to do that.
It is formal. You meet it in news, official complaints, legal writing and reports. In conversation people say "there was no need for that", "that was out of line", "a bit much, wasn't it". Because it sounds calm and official, it is a strong word to use in a written complaint — it accuses without shouting.
A warrant is an official paper giving permission, and that sense still sits underneath: something unwarranted has no permission, no backing, nothing behind it. Which is why unwarranted is also used for beliefs and conclusions with no evidence — an unwarranted assumption, unwarranted confidence.
組成un- (not) + warranted (justified, backed by good reason). Warrant as a noun is an official document giving permission — as with a police warrant to search a house.
