Of a belief, a loyalty, a support or a purpose: completely steady, never turning aside, whatever happens. To swerve is what a car does when it suddenly turns to avoid something in the road — so unswerving is the picture of a line that never bends, not even under pressure. That picture is the whole meaning: the point is not just that the belief is strong, but that there were reasons to turn and the person did not. It is a formal, word, most at home in speeches, , news reports and formal thanks. It goes before a noun and pairs with a short list of words again and again: unswerving loyalty, unswerving support, unswerving faith, unswerving commitment, unswerving devotion, unswerving belief. "Her unswerving support during those years kept the family together." A close relative is "unwavering", which is more common in modern writing and means much the same; if you are unsure which to use, "unwavering" is the safer choice. One quiet edge: because it praises never changing your mind, the word can also be used with a raised — "his unswerving faith in his own genius" is not a compliment.
