Not read. You use it for books, letters, emails, messages — anything with words in it that nobody has looked at yet. "I still have three unread books on my shelf." "She has 400 unread emails." It says nothing about whether the thing is good or bad; it only says the reading has not happened. Two small things worth knowing. First, it usually sits in front of the noun (an unread book, unread messages) rather than after the verb — people say "the book is still unread" but it sounds a bit written-down, a bit formal; in speech you would more often say "I haven't read it yet." Second, on phones and computers "unread" has become a kind of label: the little red number on your app is your unread count, and you can mark a message as unread again after you have read it, to remind yourself to come back to it. That last use is strange if you think about it — you did read it, but you told the machine you didn't. Nobody finds this odd anymore. There is also a much rarer, older use where an unread person means someone who has not read much, who is not well-read. You will meet this in old novels and almost never in speech. If you want to say someone reads a lot, the normal word is well-read, and its opposite in real conversation is just "he doesn't read much."
組成un- (not) + read. The un- here is the plain "not" prefix that English puts in front of adjectives and past participles — the same un- as in unfinished, unopened, unwanted. Note the sound: the -read in unread rhymes with red, not with reed, because it is the past participle.
