Still shut, because nobody has opened it yet. It describes things that are *supposed* to be opened at some point — letters, boxes, packages, emails, bottles, cans — and says that this has not happened. Because of that, the word usually carries a small story with it. An unopened letter on the table suggests someone did not want to read it. Three unopened emails suggests you are behind on your work. An unopened bottle of wine is one you can still give away as a present, because nobody has touched it. That last use matters when buying and selling things: 'unopened' on a shopping website means the seal is still on the box, and that raises the price. Note the shape of the word carefully: it is un- + opened, not un- + open. English keeps both, and they say different things. 'The door is not open' just tells you the door's state right now. 'The package is unopened' tells you nobody has performed the act of opening it. So we say an unopened letter, but we would not usually call a shut door 'unopened' — a door is closed. Save 'unopened' for things with a seal, a lid, a flap, or a wrapper.
