In a race or a competition, 'unplaced' means finishing without getting a place — that is, not coming first, second, or third. It belongs to a world where 'to place' means to finish in one of the top positions, especially the top three: horse racing above all, and also athletics, dog shows, flower shows, school sports days. So an unplaced horse ran the race and simply did not finish near enough to the front to be listed. It is a specialist word, mostly written, and you meet it in race reports and results tables ('he was unplaced in his last three starts'). Two things find odd. First, it does not mean the runner failed to take part or did not finish — they ran; they just came nowhere. Second, it says nothing about how badly: fourth by a whisker and last by a mile are both unplaced. In betting talk, 'place' can also mean the top two, or top four, depending on the number of runners, so what counts as unplaced shifts a little with the rules of that race. Outside sport you may occasionally see 'unplaced' in a quite different, plainer sense — something that has not been put anywhere yet, or a student or worker not yet assigned to a job or a school — but the racing meaning is the one dictionaries list.
未進入前三名的、名落孫山的(賽跑、比賽);賽馬報導說「未入圍」「沒跑進名次」
組成un- (not) + placed (having finished in one of the top positions). The special sense sits in 'place' here: in sport, to place is to earn a ranked finish, not just to put something somewhere.
