Unlovely means ugly, unpleasant to look at, or not at all attractive — but said in a soft, sideways, rather English way. Instead of calling something ugly, you say it is not lovely, and everyone understands you mean ugly. That indirectness is the whole point of the word, and it gives it a slightly dry, ironic flavour: 'the unlovely concrete blocks by the station', 'an unlovely little town'. It is used most for buildings, places, and views, and it feels literary and a little old-fashioned. It also stretches beyond looks to behaviour and character — 'an unlovely display of temper', 'the unlovely business of politics' — where it means distasteful, not nice to witness. There, the ugliness is moral rather than visual, and that use is common in newspaper commentary. Because it is , it can carry more scorn than 'ugly' does; saying a place is unlovely can sound colder than saying it is ugly outright.
