    Made of one single unit, or working as one whole thing rather than as separate parts. It is a formal word, and you meet it most often in a few fixed areas rather than in everyday talk. In and government, a 'unitary state' is a country where one central government holds the power, and any local governments only have the power the centre gives them — Taiwan, France and Japan work this way; the United States, with its strong separate states, does not. In science and maths, 'unitary' often just means 'of one unit' or 'having the value one'. In business, a 'unitary board' is one single board of directors instead of two. There is also a looser use meaning 'treating something as one thing, not as many' — a unitary view of history treats it as one single story. Note that 'unitary' is about being ONE THING, and it does not mean 'about units' in the sense of measuring. It is almost always used before a noun; people rarely say 'the system is unitary' outside academic writing.
