An unexpurgated book, play, film, or letter is the complete one — nothing has been cut out to protect people from parts that might shock or offend them. To 'expurgate' is to go through a text and take out the sex, the swearing, the politics, the cruelty, and then publish what is left. So 'unexpurgated' is what you call the version that escaped that treatment. This is a bookish, formal word, and it usually appears in one particular place: on covers and in catalogues, as a selling point. 'The unexpurgated edition', 'the complete and unexpurgated text', 'unexpurgated diaries'. There is real history behind it — for a long time in Britain and America, famous books were sold only in cut versions, and when the full text was finally allowed, publishers said so loudly. So the word carries a faint thrill: it hints there is something in there someone once wanted hidden. English also uses it playfully for speech. 'He gave us the unexpurgated version of what happened at the meeting' means he told the whole story, rude parts and all, holding nothing back. That joking use is probably the one you are most likely to meet in conversation. It is a long word and nobody will mind if you never say it — but you should recognise it, because when you see it on a book, it is telling you something about that book's past.
