Completely clear, with no room left for doubt or for a second reading. It describes words, answers, statements, evidence, support, or a refusal — not physical things. 'An unequivocal no' is a no with nothing soft around it: no 'maybe later', no 'we'll see'. The heart of the word is the idea of one meaning only. Something equivocal can be read two ways, and often on purpose — politicians and careful bosses are very good at answers that could mean either yes or no. Unequivocal is the opposite move: you close the door on the second reading. That is why it so often appears where people expected hedging and did not get it — 'the report's conclusion was unequivocal', 'she gave the project her unequivocal support'. It is a formal word from news, law, science and business writing. In speech people say 'crystal clear', 'a flat no', or 'she was very clear about it'. And be aware of the near-twin unambiguous, which means almost the same but points at the language itself (the wording allows only one reading), while unequivocal points more at the speaker's intent (they meant one thing and left no escape route).
