A joking, made-up number meaning "a lot — too many to count, and honestly I stopped counting." It behaves like thirteen or fifteen: it sits in front of a plural noun (umpteen times, umpteen emails, umpteen excuses). But it is not a real quantity, and that is the whole point. You use it when the number is not what matters — your feeling about the number is. Most often that feeling is tiredness or mild annoyance: "I've told you umpteen times" means you are fed up with repeating yourself. It can also just be cheerful exaggeration, with no complaint in it at all. It is informal and warm, the sort of word you say to a friend or a family member, not one you write in a report. There is also umpteenth for the position — "the umpteenth time she asked" — and that one is almost always exasperated.
