A turnip is a round root vegetable that grows under the ground. The part you eat is a fat white ball, often with a purple top where the sun touched it, and it has a slightly hot, slightly bitter taste — a bit like a , but softer and sweeter after you cook it. People boil it, roast it, or mash it, usually with potatoes. The word also means the whole plant, leaves and all; the leaves are called turnip greens and in the American South people cook and eat those too. In Britain the word gets used loosely: what a Scottish person calls a turnip (or a 'neep') is often what an English person calls a — the bigger yellow-orange one. So if someone tells you they ate turnip, you cannot always be sure which vegetable was on the plate. Turnips are cheap and have been food for poor people and for farm animals for hundreds of years, and that history sits inside the word: calling a person a turnip is an old, mild insult meaning slow or stupid, and in Britain people say 'you can't get blood out of a turnip' when someone has no money to give.
組成Probably turn + the old English word nep (a turnip), which came from Latin napus. Scholars are not certain why 'turn' is there — perhaps because the root is so round it looks turned on a woodworking lathe. The old nep half survives in the Scottish word neep.
