Something so obviously true that saying it teaches nobody anything — 'young people today have grown up with phones', 'money can't buy happiness'. The word is nearly always a small complaint. When you call a sentence a truism, you are saying: yes, fine, that's true, but you have added nothing, and you may be using an obvious sentence to avoid the difficult question underneath. So it lives in writing and in argument — reviews, opinion columns, discussions — more than in daily chat. One useful thing to notice: a truism is not the same as a lie or a mistake. It is true. That is exactly what makes it , because you cannot argue against it; you can only say 'and?'. People also use it a bit loosely for any tired, much-repeated saying, even one that isn't strictly obvious.
組成true + -ism. The ending -ism comes through Latin from Greek -ismos, and makes a noun for a belief, a system, or a way of speaking — as in criticism, tourism, idealism.
