A trucker is someone whose job is driving a truck — a big goods vehicle — usually over long distances. It is the everyday, friendly word; *truck driver* is the plain neutral term and *trucker* is the warm one, the one truckers use about themselves. It is strongly American. In Britain the same job is a * driver*, and a British person saying "trucker" is usually thinking of American highways. The word carries a whole picture with it in American culture: enormous trucks crossing the country at night, , coffee, CB radios, country songs. So *trucker* is not only an occupation but a kind of person in people's imagination. You will meet the word most often stuck to something else: a *trucker hat* (the mesh-backed baseball cap, now a fashion item — this is probably the most common use your students will see), a *trucker's cafe*, *trucker slang*. Note that *trucker* is a person while *trucking* is the industry, and the two are not .
組成truck + -er, the ending that turns a thing or an action into the person who works with it: teach → teacher, farm → farmer, truck → trucker. Worth telling students that this -er is one of the most useful endings in English, because it lets them build a job title from almost any verb or tool.
