The capital city of Libya, in the northwest of the country, on the Mediterranean coast. It is Libya's biggest city, its main port, and the centre of its industry — so when the news says "Tripoli", it usually means the government of Libya, not just the place. One thing worth knowing: there is a second Tripoli, a city in northern Lebanon, and it is also a real port with a long history. So if you meet the word and it does not fit Libya, check — the writer may mean the Lebanese one. Both names come from the same old Greek words meaning "three cities", because in ancient times each place was a group of three towns that grew together. There is also a Tripoli in Greece, in the middle of the , though students meet that one much less often. In older English writing you sometimes see "Tripoli" used loosely for the whole coastal region around the Libyan city, not only the city itself.
