1. 1

A tricolour is a flag made of three equal bands of different colours. It is not just any three-coloured flag — the word points to this one design, three plain stripes side by side or one above the other. With 'the' in front, it usually means one particular national flag and you have to know which country is being talked about: in France, 'the Tricolour' is the blue-white-red flag; in Ireland it is the green-white-orange one; Italians, Indians and others use the same word for theirs in their own languages. So the word carries national feeling, not just description — soldiers 'fight under the tricolour'. It also works as an adjective for anything in three colours, as in a tricolour flag or a tricolour cat. British and Irish writing spells it tricolour; American writing spells it tricolor. It is a formal, written word; in ordinary talk people just say 'the French flag'.
