A shooting sport in which a machine throws small clay discs — clay pigeons — into the air and the shooter tries to break them with a shotgun. The machine is called a trap, which is where the name comes from; in trapshooting proper the trap sits in a low bunker in front of the shooters and flings the clays away from them, so every target is going out and away. That is the detail that separates it from its sister sports: in skeet the clays cross in front of you from two towers, and in sporting clays the targets come from all over to imitate real birds. All three together are often called "clay pigeon shooting," which is the everyday British term, while "trapshooting" is the more American and more precise word. It is an Olympic sport (there under the name trap, and the international version is bunker trap or Olympic trap). The discs are not made of clay any more, by the way — they are pitch and chalk — and no pigeons are involved, though live birds genuinely were used in the nineteenth century, which is how the name got fixed.
