1. 1

A noun meaning 'the fact or condition of being transgender', built the way 'socialism' or 'tourism' is built. It is a word you should be able to recognise but should almost never write. The reason is where it turns up: because - makes a thing sound like a belief system or a movement (compare 'communism', 'vegetarianism'), the word is used mostly by people arguing that being transgender is an ideology someone chose or was talked into, rather than a plain fact about a person. Because of that history, it now reads as hostile to most readers, even to readers who could not explain why. If you need the idea in neutral English, the ordinary way is just to use the adjective: 'being transgender', 'transgender people', 'her experience as a transgender woman'. That is what newspapers, universities, and everyday careful speakers do. In academic writing from the 1990s you will also see it used quite , so date matters when you are reading. Note too that the dictionary line attached to this word mentions 'sexual behaviour', which is not right: gender identity is about who a person is, not who they are attracted to.

    跨性別(作為一種狀態的名詞說法)。注意:中文可直接說「跨性別」或「身為跨性別者」,英文的 -ism 帶有「主義/思潮」的味道,多半出現在反對方的論述裡,寫作時建議改用 being transgender。

    • the International Journal of Transgenderism
    • Transexualism. Where the compulsive urge reaches beyond female vestments, and becomes an urge for gender ("sex") change, transvestism becomes "transexualism." The term is misleading; actually, "transgenderism" is meant, because sexuality is not a major factor in primary transvestism. Psychologically, the transexual often differs from the simple cross-dresser; he is conscious at all times of a strong desire to be a woman, and the urge can be truly consuming.
