The quality of being tractable — that is, of being easy to control, handle, or work with. You use it about people (a class, a worker, a horse) when they do what is asked without a fight, and about problems, materials, or situations when they can be dealt with rather than fought. It is a formal, written word — reports, academic papers, technical writing. In everyday speech nobody says it; a Taiwanese student will see it in reading, almost never need to say it. Two things worth knowing. First, said of a person it can sound faintly cool or even condescending, as if the person is being judged for how easily they can be managed. Second, in mathematics and computing it has a sharper meaning: a problem is 'tractable' if it can actually be solved in reasonable time, so tractability there is about whether the maths is workable at all, not about anyone's temper. The opposite is 'intractability', which you will honestly meet more often — intractable problems, intractable pain, intractable conflict.
