A heavy, powerful vehicle with big rough wheels, used mostly on farms. The key idea is that a tractor is a puller: on its own it does very little, but you hook a plough, a trailer, a cutter or a behind it and it drags that machine across the field. That is why the back wheels are so large and the machine is so slow — it is built for pulling power, not speed. In everyday English it usually means the farm machine. In American English it also names the front unit of a big long-distance truck (see tractor-trailer), and in British English people sometimes call any big pulling machine on a building site a tractor loosely, though 'digger' or 'JCB' is more usual there. In Taiwan students often meet the word in reading about farming or in children's books before they ever see one, and the small hand-pushed common in fields are not really tractors — those are 耕耘機.
